Berlin

I really liked Berlin. The boat docked and we took a 2 hour train ride into Berlin. Just like here, there are dirty areas with bums and such as well as cleaner more affluent areas. We went to the nicer area later in the day so our first impression was how dirty it was in Berlin. Of course that thought was majorly contrasted once we entered the more affluent area. No graffiti, clean streets, no bums... This first picture is of Matt in front of a mini truck. Matt did not think it was as funny as I did but he was a good sport and posed for the picture anyway. This is one of my favorite places. It is a Holocaust Memorial. It is over 1000 cement blocks all the same width and depth, but varying heights. As you move through the memorial, the ground gets lower and the blocks get higher. It represents how easily one can get lost in what seems like is familiar. Each block was evenly spaced out so they were exact rows and columns, but when you walked through, you got further into the depth of what was unfamiliar almost becoming lost. Well, it is hard to explain, but it was really neat.
This picture is trying to show how tall the blocks became.

This is where the old Berlin wall stood. The entire base of the wall is outlined with these bricks so people can remember where the wall stood and how freely they can now pass from one side to the other.
This is in front of the Berlin Wall. They decided that they would keep a portion (maybe 1/4 - 1/2 of a mile) of the wall up to serve as a reminder. Local artists got to paint a section of the wall. Eventually local "tag" artists decided to add their art, therefore the entire wall is riddled with graffiti. It has been proposed to make the wall a clean slate again and allow artists to paint over everything, but I am afraid the wall will be full of graffiti in no time. It was all over this part of the city. At least we got to touch the Berlin Wall (and then put hand sanitizer on).

Berlin is a place I would love to visit. The picture of Matt next to the Mini Truck is classic! I love it. That is also cool that you got to go to the memorial. I agree with you that idiots would just continue to put graffiti on the wall. I am glad they kept a part of the wall for people to remember it. I remember when the wall came down. I was really young, but I still remember it.

I remember when the wall came down too. I was in 7th grade. It was such a big thing, and it really was not that long ago. Much has been built up where the wall was, but there are still many "empty" spots that show signs of war that have not been repaired or built upon. It was really neat to see such an historical site.

Wow! That's a small truck! I don't think it is made for tall people either. I remember the wall coming down and people were on it dancing and singing about their newly found freedom, something we've taken for granted and we're going to loose if we're not careful! The memorial is amazing and the millions that died so that that memorial stands! Sad
